Hi!

We may be transferred to Tuscon soon and have NO IDEA what it's like there. (We are on East Coast but are from San Fran Bay Area.) We are kind of alternative/progressive/art types and very family-oriented. We love city culture but actually want a safe, quiet place for our home. A yard. A garden. A safe place for our daughter to play. She's not ready for school yet, but good schools nearby are a bonus! A friendly neighborhood that is walkable. Possibly shops and coffee nearby? Hoping for a reasonably priced single family home.

Could people give me a rundown of possible residential neighborhoods so I can look on Craigslist effectively?

Also, if there is an art-type of district, what is that called? And are there homes there? What is the crime like?

TIA, people of Tuscon!

Here's a link to an older post of mine that has some area school links/info.

If you search the boards here you will find some good crime statistic resources to play around with.

Not sure what your budget is but to throw a few big name communities out there I'd say Civano on the east side, Continental Ranch/Continental Reserve in the NW, the "Spice Neighborhood" around Orange Grove/Shannon (named because of the street names), Sam Hughes in Central.. the list really goes on and on.

As far as an arts district we have the Warehouse District (http://www.visittucson.org/group/tour/itineraries/art/ - broken link), and here is another link to Visittucson.org and art-related links.

Also check out 4th Ave, you would probably enjoy that also!

Thanks so much, Michael! I guess I should have mentioned that we are looking for "affordable" housing (whatever that means...) However, we've been living in the Bay Area so what is affordable is all relative, huh? I guess I have no idea what things cost in Tucson yet.

We are planning on renting. We have some debt to pay off and eventually want to buy, so if we can stay small now we can possibly start some savings. That said, however, we are willing to pay a little more for a nicer home or neighborhood and perhaps willing to live further out (a little) to get more home for our buck.

Thanks again for the links and suggestions. You are wonderful.

Not a problem, you'll find that this forum is pretty helpful. Here is a link to the Tucson MLS, and a zip code map (http://www.asmta.org/images/tucson.jpg - broken link) might be useful too.
