My family may have to relocate to Tulsa from Austin (big bummer, and no, we did not go to UT!). We like old houses, 1920s-1930s, and cannot see ourselves in the 'burbs. We know the elementary schools in Jenks, etc. are strong, and it would probably be easier to meet people, but we just love the heart and soul of older neighborhoods. But, we are concerned about buying in the older neighborhoods (Lewis, Peoria, 21st, etc), and having it be cliquish and snobby. I have heard Tulsa people are nice in general, but wonder if anyone out there knows about people in the older neighborhoods? What about the snob factor of the private schools like Monte Casino, Cascius Hall, etc.? Are they open to outsiders, or are we better off throwing in the towel and heading to Jenks, Bixby, etc.? If you answer, please let me know if you have first hand knowledge, or if you just think it's likely that people in this area are going to be snobby.
Are there any cool old neighborhoods where Tulsa folks would welcome fun-loving corporate transfer types?!
Thanks!

I wouldn't think people are any more snobby or cliquish in Tulsa's older neighborhoods more or less than any other place. Generally, Tulsans are great people and the city of Tulsa is experiencing an urban revitalization in the form of vision2025, a group of projects (new arena downtown, river development, etc) aimed at improving the infrastructure and urban quality of life. Tulsa's old neighborhoods are beautiful. I haven't lived there in a long time, and when I did I lived in an apt (young and poor) but we drove through many of the older neighborhoods and the homes are absolutely beautiful.
Tulsa has a fantastic park system, among them are the river parks; miles and miles of very nice walking trails, bike paths, and such along the Arkansas River, which runs right next to downtown. Downtown Tulsa is also unique in that it is built up much more than most other cities of its size. It appears to be much larger, and the art deco architecture is phenomenal. There are alot of museums and cultural things as well; some of the finest museums in the country are in Tulsa (Gilcrease, Philbrook). Tulsa is a great city, and I would love to live there again. Presently I live in the DFW area. Best of luck on your move. Look for the good things and you'll be surprised how much you could love Tulsa.

Thanks for your positive outlook! Yes, we drove through the older neighborhoods in Tulsa, and they are GORGEOUS. We have been through 4 corporate moves in 15 years, and always do our best to embrace the local culture and meet people. We have also found some cities to be more welcoming to outsiders than others, and different areas of town to be more welcoming as well. It is tricky to make sure you land in the right spot to give your family a running start on making it feel like home. This will probably be our last move, so we want to make sure we make good decisions!

I moved to Tulsa 4 years ago, and live near Florence Park... there's definitely no snob factor here. The neighbors are friendly, and we've got a new (and growing!) neighborhood association. Best of luck with your move!

We live in a 1928 home in the Maple Ridge area and most of the incoming people are younger professionals and many of them have previously moved away and are now returning to Tulsa. We have block parties with many of our neighbors and the majority of them are VERY friendly and they look out for one another. Of course you're going to find some that are snobby or rude but you'll find just as many or more in South Tulsa or whatever other Burb your family is looking at.
