With the growth of cable TV channels, quite a few older series have found new lives in continuous syndication, sometimes hopping from network to network, or cropping up at odd hours around the clock.
However, there are some that - despite being very popular in the past - have simply fallen out of syndication, or were not syndicated to begin with (perhaps due to legal arguments over rights-holders and so on).
What are some examples of this? For instance, St. Elsewhere was one of the highest-rated serial dramas of the 1980's, but it lost its last US syndication partner (ALN/American Life Network) late last year. It is out of syndication for the time being.
"ER" is an interesting case. TNT still holds the syndication rights, but decided to take a "pause" last year, at the same time that late-season DVDs for the show were being released. They apparently plan to bring it back at some future point, but the date is uncertain.
It's also interesting to look back on shows that weren't necessarily the most popular when they aired, but have had a long syndicated run anyway. "Flipper" would probably fall into that category. It did reasonably well at the time, but nothing that would have predicted ongoing syndication nearly 50 years after it began.
I'd really like to see some of the old shows I grew up on like Blossom, Punky Brewster, Mr. Belvedere, Growing Pains, and Webster.
