I pretty much agree with 20yrs' list -- except that I think I LOVE LUCY belongs there.
Whether you like the show or not, it was groundbreaking for many reasons. Many stores and other businesses closed early on the night it was televised, with signs in their windows saying WE LOVE LUCY TOO.
It would be easier to come up with the top 100 shows. Or put them into categories, like comedy, drama, ( & dramedy?), action, medical, western, etc., or maybe the best shows on the air right now.
But I agree on the Sopranos. That was a modern version of Shakespeare.
All in the Family was groundbreaking and led the way for not only the relatively outlandish comedy you see today, but also to shows that aren't afraid to take on social issues, right or wrong.
I think maybe M*A*S*H followed in Archie's footsteps, and was maybe the first dramedy. I'd have to research that. But it was certainly the most well written, longest running, highest rated (once it got started) shows of all time, and it's still a pleasure to watch even though I've probably seen every episode 20 times. M*A*S*H is timeless. Spin off may be inaccurate, but it came from one of the most popular books and movies of all time.
I personally think that Green Acres was one of the most well written sitcoms of all time, not to mention the subtle humor it conveyed. It was a groundbreaker in sitcoms too.
I Love Lucy is is a class all alone. For shear numbers (ratings, episodes produced, longevity) it has to be in any top (pick a number) list.
This makes 6, but Pretzelogic is right about The Simpsons. Isn't it the longest running show in history? And it appeals to all ages.
And let's not forget Saturday Night Live.
Television didn't start in 2000 with cable TV. It was already nearly 60 years old by then. And we had cable for most of that time.
Now, my list of the best shows on the air right now would be a different story, but there aren't any that would qualify as the top 5 of all time.
Yuck, that looks like what my dad's list would look like.To each his own though.
I like the shows you listed, but it is kind of sad you that you limited yourself to only recent TV shows.
Learn to appreciate films, TV, and music prior to the year 2000. You might find some things you like and it makes you a more interesting and well rounded person.
