There are so many long running shows and even non long running shows that were very popular when they were on the air, but did not stand the test of time in reruns.
Here is my list (some of you might not know any of these shows, which proves my point even more) i'll list sitcoms from the last 40 years, as this seems to be more common in shows after the 1960s.
-Alice
-Maude
-Too Close For Comfort
-Archie Bunkers Place
-One Day at a Time
-Mr. Belvedere
-Gimme a Break
-Small Wonder
-Murphy Brown
-Mad About You
-Blossom
-Sister, Sister
-3rd Rock From The Sun
-Suddenly Susan
-Caroline in the City
-Scrubs
-According to Jim
-8 Simple Rules
-The Office (did not want to add this but every station that airs it in reruns moved the timeslot from evening to the middle of the night because they are still under contract to air the episodes)
Anyone else notice this? What other shows can people add?
Happy Days and all of its spin offs. Laverne and Shirley, Joanie Loves Chachie and Mork and Mindy.
I agree with everything except Happy Days and Laverne and Shirley. Both those shows still are on tv in reruns, especially Happy Days I'm no longer a fan of the spin offs though.
For comedy,
I notice sitcoms (with an audience) tend to do better in reruns than those dry dark humor sitcoms with no laugh track....none of them have done good in reruns, here is an example....
Malcolm in the Middle
Bernie Mac
Scrubs, The Office, and My Name is Earl (as others mentioned)
Everybody Hates Chris
I'm sure there are more just can't think of them.
For drama
Most never do well in reruns but a select few. It has always been that way with dramas. Action/crime shows do better when comparing the two genres.
Sitcoms that relied more on topical humor were writing their own death warrant. They were/are great at the time, but situations and attitudes change over time and people in the news (and in punchlines) can be quickly forgotten. That's why Maude doesn't really play well in reruns, as well as One Day at a Time and Murphy Brown (though unlike Maude, I'd love to see MB again). All in the Family seems able to buck this trend, and MASH to a lesser extent.
It should also be noted that sometimes certain shows are simply mis-managed by syndicators, and "allowed" to fall out of favor simply because they aren't seen on prominent cable networks or other places.
