Funny but I grew up sitting in front of an old B&W Philco television watching Captain Kangaroo but I can't recall Debbie Weems. I guess that's probably because I'm old enough to remember Captain Kangaroo.
I don't remember the Captain in color either. When did that happen? Was it just because we didn't get a color TV until 1967 (and by then I'd stopped watching Captain Kangaroo anyway -- darn school got in the way of TV watching!)?
I grew up in the 1970s, which was the last decade of the Monday-Friday hour-long Captain Kangaroo. "Debbie" appeared on some episodes during that time.
The first episodes I remember had a stringed-instrument theme. The later episodes included a "sung" theme.
Keeshan suffered a heart attack in the early 80s, and CBS gradually sent "the Captain" adrift:
I loved this show as a kid. I remember laughing hysterically to the whole ping pong gag. I only saw the show in color - but I was born in '74 and probably saw just the last few years.
I was born in 73 and I only remember the Captain in color. I even remember that intro. I used to watch in the morning before leaving for school. Loved when played Mr. Pennywhistle
