I just watched Mad Men recently. I'm not American and a question comes to my mind.
Basically all characters there have slept with random persons. All married men have some affairs. The other TV plays I watched are basically the same. It is just a TV show, but how real is it? Are Americans really like this in general?
Considering divorce rate is above 50%, and there must be many undetected/tolerated affairs, I have started to believe it is truly ubiquitous.
The answer is no but without the juicy storyline, the show would be somewhat boring. Compare the shows you watch in your country to the day to day reality. I am guessing that they differ a good bit as well.

Just advertising people, politicians and televangelists :-)
But when the Mexicans finally take over the US, Thursday will be girlfriend night, just like it is back home.

1. It's TV, it's not a realistic portrayal of human existence.
2. This may come as a surprise, but men all over the world have long exhibited a desire for multiple sexual partners, sometimes even at the same time.
The main character is a sociopath, the rest are drunks and experiment with drugs and "free love."
Comparing this show to real life today, is like showing a caveman a cell phone.
However cheating is one of the top reasons why marriages break up today. I would assume, the cheater, in most cases is only cheating with one other person at a time, and not with multiple partners, like the show suggests.
A quick search suggests that 25% of couples site cheating (among other issues) as reason for divorce.
