I have begun to really appreciate the shows that take the time and care to create fairly lengthy, vivid openings that with images and song evoke the feel of the series. I take the time to watch them each time. They really serve as kind of an appetizer to get me in the mood to watch the episode.

Some favorites that readily come to mind are:

"Game of Thrones" (I got really excited the first time I realized that GoT's openings changed according to what was happening in the episode)

"True Detective" (gritty, dissolute and damaged)

"The Affair"

"Outlander"

Anybody have any others?

The Sopranos and Dexter had excellent opening montages, nicely melding the sonic and the visual elements.

But, really, the original Hawaii 5-0 set a standard that has never been topped, in my opinion.

The opening credits for "Miami Vice" with the two bikini chicks walking by for like half a second; I remember wearing out our old betamax pausing and slow mowing on that

"Marco Polo", I like the graphic images of sand pouring to form credits"Sunday Night Football" and what's her name prancing around in her mini-skirt singing the football tune

The opening credit sequence for "F Troop" gave us a song which set up the premise of the show quite nicely and the montage of images completed the picture.

Of course, as with "Gilligan's Island", the opening sequence was the best thing about the show.
