When the NBC suits began messing with Homicide: Life on the Street by adding Falzone to the squad. It had been the best show on television prior to that.
1. Networks tend to go in cycles of types of programming they emphasize. The upcoming season looks like an NBC-loser...for my tastes. Others may like the programming. Over time, something different will cycle in and out.
2. However, I think the OP is right in that I don't sense that Comcast really understands the history of NBC as one of the two truly great historical networks in our country. To Comcast, NBC is just a vehicle to make huge profits. Personally, I think the GE years were the last of the real NBC. Now it's just a network with no real traditions, except perhaps the Today Show juggernaut, and possibly Tonight.

For those of you who remember life before the year 2000, NBC was once a great broadcast network that produced some really good television programs in the 1980s and 1990s.
Well, they also had some great shows in the '50s, '60s, and '70s, many of them classics. A real grand time to watch television.
NBC's last gasp of life was in the '90s during the whole "Must See TV" era of Friends, Seinfeld, Frasier, etc. Once those shows were gone, there was still the odd good show now and then, but they were merely the death throes. 30 Rock was a great show, but even they were constantly making fun of how bad NBC is.
The Big Four networks are all pretty pathetic these days. I watch a few shows on each every now and then, but there isn't a single show on any of them that I make a point never to miss. We are currently in a new Golden Age of television, but everything on the Big Four is tin foil. All the truly great TV is on cable these days, on networks like HBO, Showtime, AMC, FX, Neftlix, Hulu, etc.
I only watch NBC for the sports. For that matter I only watch the big 3 networks for sports in general. I did watch law and Order SVU until Christopher Meloni stopped doing the show.
To answer the question NBC has reached a very critical period IMO. Currently they have 10 dramas in their line up and 10 reality tv shows. That's a very fine line to walk IMO. As a result you have crap on tv.
Remember though the Olympics are coming up, summer Olympics at that, so NBC should be seeing some nice revenues coming in as a result. Especially with people waiting for Rio to blow up.
