I mentioned in another thread that the show was being rebooted along with Magnum PI.
Figured I would start another one specific to "Cagney & Lacey"

That was quick. Less than a week after news broke that popular Grey’s Anatomy cast member Sarah Drew will be exiting the series at the end of the current 14th season, she has been tapped as co-lead Cagney in CBS’ Cagney & Lacey drama pilot. Blindspot alum Michelle Hurd has been cast as fellow co-lead Lacey in the reboot of the iconic 1980s police procedural.
Written by Bridget Carpenter and directed by Rosemary Rodriguez, the new Cagney & Lacey will follow the two female police detectives and friends who keep the streets of Los Angeles safe.
On a personal level this is a little disappointing. I have never been a Hurd fan going back to her SVU days. That alone may keep me from checking the show out
Why? I get reviving a series with the original cast to show the characters at a different stage of life. But in a situation like this, why not just come up with a new series altogether?

Well, it's worked for Hawaii Five-0 for eight seasons.

That one is done more as a sequel, though. There's continuity between the two series, with the new Steve McGarrett being the son of the original McGarrett.
The new Cagney and Lacey appears to be an entirely new show with different characters in the same title roles. Without the continuity I don't see the point of bringing back the name rather than starting from scratch.
I'm not saying it won't work, that will depend on the quality of the show. I'm just saying that it really doesn't make any sense.

Steve McGarrett of the new series is the son of John McGarrett. Not the son of the original Steve McGarrett from the 1968 series.

Thanks for setting me straight. I don't watch the show, I was going by what I thought I read on a Fandom site. I see now that he's the GRANDSON of another Steve McGarrett who apparently died at Pearl Harbor.
So apparently the viewing public is no more discriminating than the producers of television shows are creative.
