I thought I'd get a thread started on this show since they started production this month filming in England.

"The story of the Targaryen civil war that took place about 300 years before events portrayed in "Game of Thrones." The story will center around Rhaenyra and Aegon II Targaryen as they grapple to be successor to the Iron Throne once occupied by the late King Viserys. Rhaenyra (D’Arcy) believes that as Viserys’ eldest daughter, the throne belongs to her. However, Viserys’ second wife, Alicent, hands the throne over to Aegon since he’s the eldest son in the family line." The 10-episode first season of “House of the Dragon” is based on George R.R. Martin’s “Fire & Blood” novel.

Ramin Djawadi, who composed the score for “Game of Thrones,” will score “House of the Dragon.

Main cast so far:

Eve Best Princess Rhaenys Velaryon
Paddy Considine Viserys Targaryen
Olivia Cooke Alicent Hightower
Emma D'Arcy Rhaenyra Targaryen
Fabien Frankel Criston Cole
Rhys Ifans Otto Hightower
Sonoya Mizuno Mysaria
Matt Smith Daemon Targaryen
Steve Toussaint Lord Corlys Velaryon

I hope it will be good. We'll see. Minor correction: Fire & Blood isn't a novel. It's a fictional history.

Something strikes me as weird about the world in which these shows are set. This is a prequel, right? Set thousands of years before GAME OF THRONES, right? So why are the technology, the weapons, the building styles, and even the clothes and hairstyles almost exactly the same?

That would be like all of us still being in the early Iron Age.

Why is Westeros seemingly "permanently stuck" in the Middle Ages?

After what they did to GOT and Daenerys Targaryen - they can count me out from watching.

"They" are different people working on this show. Weiss and Benioff are gone.

That doesn't necessarily mean this show will be any better. It might be. It might be worse. But if so, you won't be able to blame the same people.

300 years before GOT. The original prequel that was developed and unofficially titled "The Long Night" and subsequently cancelled after filming the pilot episode was set thousands of years before GOT. I understand what you're saying though.

Well, that makes a little more sense, I guess. Our own Middle Ages lasted almost a thousand yearsish. With lots of political upheaval and natural (or supernatural?) disasters, it's more than feasible that society doesn't advance all that much in 300 years.

I thought I'd revive this thread. The GOT prequel has wrapped filming for the first season and is currently in post-production, CGI, etc. The series is now set around 200 years before Game of Thrones (rather than 300).

Rhys Ifans has come through so many transformations since he was in “Notting Hill”
This one will be interesting as the past ones have been

So 2 weeks before Amazon's RINGS OF POWER series. Heh. Pretty smart of HBO.

The overall reaction to the two shows has been interesting. By and large, people seem to be genuinely looking forward to HOUSE OF THE DRAGON, whereas people seem to be preparing torches and sharpening pitchforks for RINGS OF POWER.
