I already have an elementary Spanish class under my belt, which I finished a year ago. As much as I would have wanted that to mean something, Spanish serves little purpose in Louisiana.
Trivia: I recently found out that Louisiana has its own Spanish dialect that is about to disappear in a few years!
Nowadays, with the Internet you can practice your Spanish anywhere in the world. Read online newspapers, listen to Spanish language radio and tv stations from many countries, even get a few penpals!
If you are a Pharmacist you'd be better off economically than if you were a stock boy. However as a pharmacist you may have to answer questions and speak to clients in Spanish, most won't know a word of English. You might be able to get by in the Walgreens of Condado, but certainly not in the Walgreens of Juncos or Caguas.
About crime, if you can live in the most violent State in the U.S. Louisiana, you can live in Puerto Rico. 50% of the crime on the island is drug related. The other 50% is petty/violent crime, crimes of passion and family violence. The local press has the island in a 24/7 hysteria making everyone think they live in Cadman New Jersey, Youngs town Ohio or Detroit.
Bottom line, moving to Puerto Rico is not like moving to Texas, Alabama or Florida, its more like moving to the Dominican Republic, Costa Rica or Venezuela, All speak spanish but we use U.S dollars.
