Just thought I'd share, especially since I know many of us are on the edge, or well beyond it, and in need of any help they can garner. This is especially true for the oft-overlooked single-payer (unmarried, no children).

Here in Houston there are several food bank distribution:

Houston Food Bank

Some also have clothing, offer computer training/use, and much more. Several don't require anything more than a photo I.D.

I'd recommend getting the names of the ones in your area, then googling their websites. You'll get a lot more information.

The Houston Water Fund helps low-income persons pay their bill. This is especially important as rates went up recently. A normally $14/month bill is now $40.

Anyone have any more resources for aid? Other areas? Lets share!

I wish this included my county of Jackson, however there is nothing on this list that would help me.

Look for the state/city Foodbank and see if they have distribution at a local church or other organization.

There isn't really much other than the possible food handout that a single-payer can get. I can find 0 healthcare resources for single-payers in Houston, unless, however, you make under $162/month in which case you could be covered by one of 2 County programs.

I now get food stamps (or card or what ever you want to call it) so for the most part if I'm very very careful I can make it last month to month. Our county has no resorces acording to my case worker (I have one because of the food stamps) that would help me a near 60 year old single woman. Even the churches in our area are tapped out.

Well my sympathies.

For me I don't qualify for food assistance from the State/County...aka: The Lonestar Card. I make too much money from unemployment.

No help unless you have children. That is why a lot of people have children. I know of a woman who deliberately had a child because her youngest was about to age out.

Sad but true.

It was, back when Clinton was in office and before. Welfare was huge news, and welfare babies...But Clinton quashed most of the discussion when he announced a plan to get people off welfare...which didn't exactly work.

The closest I've seen was a group complaining about the lack of help for single-payers in regards to health care reform. Not that it matters anymore.

Even if people realized how many single-payers were denied social aid I doubt it would matter- as has been proven time and again- when someone has a job their thoughts on those less fortunate are usually absent, or at best they have confused ideas on how it is a given system works.

I used to get such frequently from friends telling me I could apply for food assistance, health care, etc. When my ear drum burst and I was trying to see any county clinic doctor I was told that "there are programs you can sign up for"- this by a front desk person at a county clinic...with blood running down my ears. The truth is- there are no programs for me. I'm single, and without children. So we're left to suffer and die.

Even supposing I could afford the $574 COBRA every month, that's 50% of my UI.

The thing that *really* stinks is that because we can't get on these county/state/federal aid programs, we're also discriminated against when looking for jobs: Having received *any* such aid grants an employer a minimum $2,500 tax credit. This also applies to those returning to school, funny enough.

Single payers who can't collect such aid, who have never been in prison, are the lowest of the low.

This is very unfortunate for many people out there who really need it. But, another sad thing about gov't assistance - that I see happening right before my eyes - and it's illegal....

Women who have children, they get there food stamps/cash assistance simply because they are "single" and have children, but what they don't report (because they'd be doomed), is that fact that they have a "boyfriend" who leaves every a.m. for work, and comes home every evening. This buys them "more" food, pays rent, bills, etc....In the meantime, she is collecting from the government and is now able to be a "stay at home" MOM....

My father, a retired police officer, used to turn people in all the time for this when he was out on patrol many, many years ago. Nowadays, people just sit there and let it happen right in front of their eyes. Maybe we need to be a little more proactive and step up to the plate and do the same. Maybe this will give others who really need it the opportunity.

In other words folks, it is ILLEGAL to collect from the govenment when you have someone in your household supporting you and your children......
