Lengthy discussion on this thread

https://www.city-data.com/forum/unemp...l#post15310959

Congress in recess until September. Rumored help for 99ers amounts to makework jobs and job retraining at some point down the road. Just talk for now. No tier extensions and no money.

Best to apply for food stamps, energy assistance and whatever other help you can get, student loan forebearance, etc. There will be nothing forthcoming from Congress anytime soon.

I don't think it looks good for anything more than 99 weeks. The House + Senate aren't even remotely advancing towards any addition extensions. If they do, it will be quite some time in my opinion. I know it is not what people want to hear but there just isn't anything brewing. How many people have called in, wrote letters, marched, etc. It is unfortunately not doing any good at all and when Pelosi was asked about it, she put that sarcastic grin on her face. A few other members here wrote some things in other threads which are unfortunately the best solution. Look into food stamps and other government programs to get by. Tier 5 seems like 5 light years away.

It turns out that no help is needed. As of last week BHO was estimated to have saved 3-4M jobs. But this week we have learned from the Treasury Secretary that the actual number ir 8-9M. So all this concern for the jobless was blown way out proportion - in reality there's nothing to worry about.

Geithner is always good for a laugh. In his whimsically titled NYT piece Welcome to the Recovery he lists all the miraculous results of the multi-trillion dollar bailouts and stimulus. My favorite is:

American families are saving more, paying down their debt and borrowing more responsibly. This has been a necessary adjustment because the borrow-and-spend path we were on wasn’t sustainable.

Funny - no mention of 99ers though...
