In Europe if someone loses their job and goes on unemployment they are paid very close to their old wage when they were working. That way they can continue their standard of living and continue to pay their fixed bills while they look for a new job. In America if you are lucky you will only get up to 50% of your last gross income while on unemployment. Considering that most people have fixed expenses of about 70% of their income that means that many unemployed people in America who are collecting benefits without significant savings will not be able to pay their bills.
So do you think that the unemployed should get closer to their last income on unemployment while collecting benefits like in Europe?
Then what is a fair percentage of the newly unemployed person's previous wage that will both encourage them to look hard for a new job and still allow them to pay their bills while looking for a new job?

Sky-high severance costs is one of the factors that tends to keep unemployment relatively high in Europe.
Unemployment INSURANCE costs should be based on the salary being protected. That's how insurance works. If the unemployed had more money NOW our economy wouldn't be in as big a mess as it is in today.

I thought that was the case - don't employers pay a state-set percentage of payroll?

Since American people who look for a job can't find one, there is no correlation between unemployment compensation and duration of unemployment.
As for Europe, short term unemployment is compensated at a higher rate than in the US, that's a fact, but long term unemployment is compensated at a very similar rate, except for people over 50 or 55.
Weekend Traveler, I'll admit this is one of your "better" posts, but I don't get why (even as "The Outcast") you were so putting down the unemployed yet now say they should get more money so they can pay their bills and defend them. It's nice to see.
That said, I think the current system of half-pay is the best balance, including that of what government can pay. But I would make the limits you can get per week much higher. For example, in NY, the $405/week limit means anyone who made more than $810/week (or a little over $40,000/year) is getting UI at less than half-pay. I think it should be a NATIONAL, not state-by-state limit, and be about $1000/week.
