I just read a comment on the NC unemployment board and it got me to thinking. The poster said that they did most of their work searches in person and wondered what would happen if the person they gave their application / resume just tossed it out. Anybody ever have their local UE office have an issue with a business that could not locate an application? I always print my online application after sending them but also do some in person and it would be bad to lose benefits because someone misplaced an application. Just wondering. (Too much time on my hands)

It's my opinion that the states do not try to contact the business on the work search form, but I don't know it for a fact.

I base it on this: If I'm paying an employee to open mail and get a letter from the state asking if "so so applied," and it's not in the form of a subpoena, I'm going to throw it in the trash. In the event I get a call, i'm going to say, "I don't feel like looking it up."

The state cannot hold a claimant responsible for the employer declining to provide.

But only someone that's really gone through a detailed work search audit can tell us what really happens.

My husband has worked in retail mgmt for 20 yrs and he said he's never gotten anything from any state unemployment office despite zillions of applications being turned in to the places he has worked. I would be steaming mad personally if they contacted one of my work searches and got told nope never heard of her. Half the time when I do give one to a mgr even I know they don't really want to stand there and talk to me but I always hope it helps somehow to do it in person.

I went through a UE audit of my job search logs in my state just this month. Every single page of four months of weekly job logs were examined.

The examiner seemed largely disinterested in the actual jobs that I listed or anything about them, he was predominately fixated on the UE job search log forms being filled out absolutely completely perfectly. That every online website include www., complete street addresses to include zip codes, dates listed numerically as dd/mm/yr--all that kind of thing.

Didn't care a whit about the job or the employer.

azoria.....just out of curiosity, which state are you in, which tier are you on, and what are the log forms you talked about? Are there standardized work search log forms we are supposed to use? Thanks....

This from the NC website:

Work Search Record (NCUI 506E)

The Employment Security Law requires claimants to actively seek work. Commission Regulation 10.25 defines the minimally acceptable work search effort as two in-person contacts with different employers on different days for each week claimed.
