I filed for unemployment march 20th. I seemed to have won the case april 23 but they told me it will be about two weeks before I get unemployment checks.

First question: How do they expect paycheck to paycheck people to live 1.5 months without any sort of income?

Second: Do my benefits only start when i won the case? Or do i receive the money from the time I filed until now as well in the first check? I have been buried in bills.

I am sorry for any grammatical errors as english is my second language.

also the state is connecticut

They don't care. Long delays between filing and payment are common in many states. Six weeks is not long, frankly. Especially, if you were denied and needed to appeal. In NJ, it can take six to seven weeks just for an initial determination, an appeal another four-six months. This is done to force people into working any job, I've concluded. They want them "off the dole."

In all states, payment is retro to the date you filed. Since you are only about six weeks in arrears, you should be paid in a lump sum.
