I started work in Dec 2013 and was laid off in May 2014. (5 months)
According to the Unemployment Office in California:
I have to wait to file until July 2014 to qualify for FULL benefits, otherwise filing now gets me very little.
My question:
I have to tough it out on savings for the next 2 months 1/2. Can i leave the country in this time before filing and then come back when its time to file?
Maybe. Here's a potential issue. While out of the country, your employer says, "hey, we want you back," and you say, "I can't. I'm vacationing out of the country."
yes, im thinking safest bet is to stay in the country. They said moving states is not a problem. I've been keeping records of my job search in the meantime too just in case that somehow is required.
The hardest part is not having any income or benefits during this trying 2 1/2 months period. I've been selling off personal property to sustain myself.
In the US or outside the US, you don't have to prove a job search unless you are claiming benefits. Which you will not be until after July 6.
That said, if, in the meantime, your employer offers you your old job and you refuse or are not available, then, when you do file, that employer will contest the claim. If the likelihood of a callback doesn't exist, then you can leave the country until July. After you file, you need to stay here.
Btw, not sure what the rep told you, but do not file for benefits any earlier than July 6, or CA may still exclude the quarter ending 6/30.
