My company went out of business three months ago. I am recieving unemployment. This is my last week. I received a letter that my benefits ran out. I have worked my entire life. I'm am 42. I was only at last company a year before they closed up shop. Shouldn't I be eligible for 6 months? Not an extension, just 6 months off the bat?

I ask because I am on my third interview for a job that will start in May. It is looking good. If I get the job I will have three weeks of no pay. If I don't get this job even worse.

Any ideas on why it was just three months to start with?

Thanks in advance.

Some states give less than 26 weeks UE benefits. What state are you in? How much was in your UE benefits fund and how much are you getting weekly?

It all depends on your STATE. Your zipcode says NJ - but NJ is paying 26 weeks.

Does the Jax screen name mean you are in FL??? If so, FL can pay as few as 12 weeks, depending on unemployment rate - since 2012.

If you are in FL - and you are lucky enough that FL did not file a combined wage claim w/NJ wages when you first applied - and you have employment history in NJ, you may yet be able to open a NJ claim - assuming there are at least 20 weeks of NJ wages or at least $8,300 NJ wages in a base period Jan-Dec. 2014.

Now all this is PURE CONJECTURE because you have not told us what state you are in or where you have worked before.

You also didn't elborate on your monetary award. Thing is if you thought you should have gotten 26-weeks now, why didn't you think that then. You might still have options, but you shouldn't wait 3-months to do something. Sometimes you'll later learn from the UI people that "had you done something then we could have helped you, but because you waited, now we can't."

Post your earnings history by state and by calendar quarter for the last 18-months. That will help us give you a good answer quickly rather than trying to extract information a little bit at a time over possibly a week, and in UI, sometimes even a day can make all the difference.
