The EDD call center is now in India.

I called EDD this morning to ask why my claim was still pending (I filed on Sunday). The woman that answered had such a heavy accent, I couldn't understand her. I hung up, waited a few minutes, then called back.

I then got another woman with an Indian accent but not as heavy. She couldn't answer my question, said that I was doing my claim form wrong, and scheduled me for a phone interview.

I'm wondering if someone that's in the US is going to call me.

I remember about 10 years ago a TV program called "Outsourced." It was set at a call center in India, and was really funny, but only lasted one season. I suspect it was too politically incorrect, or perhaps hit people too close to home. Unfortunately these call centers use scripts, and cannot help you if you ask a question not on their list.

This is true, and it's going to cause a huge problem for EDD now.

All California EDD Call Center operations are based within the state itself. They DO NOT outsource to foreign countries. It's not unusual to get foreign sounding people on the phone as the State actively encourages and gives preferential hiring to bi or multi lingual applicants. Since most "americans" can't speak a foreign language, it;s natural to find many foreign born/speaking people in those positions. However, it's nothing as bad as when a business has to call some call center located in the southeast USA.

Except it’s not actually true.

It sure sounded like they outsourced the call center, since I got two woman with Indian accents The second one was unable to answer my question (why is my payment pending) so she scheduled me for a phone interview.

I'm going to call again in the morning to see if I get someone that can do their job.

She also said that if I have three part time jobs, then I should be getting 40 hours per week. But if that was true, I wouldn't have to rely on unemployment to make up the difference in my pay, and sometimes I get zero hours per week.

Expect this more and more as states attempt to reduce cost through the elimination of contract translator services. By paying a slight premium to those who can speak different languages, the state can keep the foreign language calls in-house. The flip side is the number of applicants that fit the needed language hiring is very limited resulting in the majority being foreigners with work authorization. So they rightfully get the jobs based on needed skill.

I called again this morning, and got someone else with an accent, but not from India. She said that the other person requested a phone interview due to a communication problem, I guess because she couldn't answer my question. At least this one knew what she was doing, and did manage to change my phone interview to an earlier date, which is going to help.

Finding full time security work isn't like it used to be, even at minimum wage.
