Very interesting. Since the retina converts the light reflected off the surface of particles having mass into electromagnetic signals transmitted to the brain that are collectively configured into a visual image we perceive, then the object you saw was composed of matter therefore you must have visually seen it physically. Which if being ghostly or supernatural, it would have been formed by particles without mass therefore unseen, or invisible.
Since you refute the premise that you imagined the object, then the imagine you saw, being a form of nature unknown to you would have had a form of nature resulted in the object described being imagined by your perception as a semi-transparent shadowy silhouette of a person, most likely have been a phasm, or ionized gas.
Thusly, since no two bodies of mass can occupy the same space at the same time then as the motion of the particles of the unknown reflected matter moved it gave your imagination the perception of running and then when the particles contacted your skin you further perceived that the imagined object enter into you. As the particles impacted your flesh detected by the sensual receptors of your senses, the cessation of the particles striking your skin resulted in your interpretation that there movement around and past you is being interpreted entering into you.
Therefore,in order to rationalize your misperception, your subconscious response of helplessness was produced due to your conscious failure to reasonably interpret the physical information obtained by your senses.
