We had to handle that one on our own. But, to be fair, President Reagan arranged behind the scenes help. No way was he going to see his girl Maggie Thatcher go down!!

Btw,americans pay taxes to keep UK safe since 1945,US is also paying for the US military bases in UK,so indirectly americans are already paying taxes to the british and we deserve it.
What a load of bollox. Nobody is preventing the US from pulling its troops, aircraft and missiles out.

The US were a bit schizo when it came to the Falklands War. On the one hand the State Dept. were cosying up to the Argentinians while, on the other hand, the defence department were very pro-British. Reagan spent most of his time on damage limitation.

The issue is not preventing, UK asked the US for protection.

We did? Isn't it more like you have been here since the Second World War. You never go home once you're in any country. Our government and yours are allies, so here you are. My country has been described in the past, by officials in America, as, "our unsinkable battleship."

It is time for America to close bases in many countries in Europe. But it's not going to happen is it?

What the US got during the Cold War was a base for early warning systems as well as a forward launch pad for strategic bombers.

Indeed.

Who wouldn't want to crawl back onto their plane with those burst appendix rather than take advantage of the free emergency healthcare that any visitor to the UK can get. To consider receiving life saving treatment anywhere other than in the US is clearly preposterous!

I mean, death is quite clearly preferable...

One of the areas of disappointment for me with the Obama administration is just how much Americam military operations have been ramped up around the world. Europe especially free rides on US military muscle and should take more responsibility for itself.

American taxpayers can't afford to keep policing the world like its stil the 1980's.

Back to the OP; foreign visitors do not get free healthcare. They would be treated in an emergency room but technically they would be billed.
