The tendancy with Scotland is for people to have a romantic perspective. With or without independence there are things you need to take into serious consideration:

The NHS in Scotland is not NHS England - they have no connection - they are completely different organisations. My experience of NHS Scotland was that although they have shorter waiting times than England, their skills aren't up to speed, it simply doesn't have a broad knowledge base - and you have very little recourse. I had problems while I was there and only two weeks ago (three years after I left) I discovered they had not bothered informing me about an (important) test that was done and the results were not placed on my records. Their response - two weeks later and I'm still waiting. They won't do anything. They don't have to - it's Scotland.

You also have to take into consideration that the legal system is different - different law society. Much, much more difficult to get cases into court.

The weather - yep, I used to like the cooler weather too - but you get three bad summers on the trot, tied in with bad winters and you are screaming for sunshine. Continual grey summer days are no fun (not in the long term)

If I was going to sum up my opinion of Scotland and you have to bear in mind that regions are very different although the infrastructure is the same - I'd say it was very insular. It wants to carry on doing what it does and in the same way it's done it for a long time - for better or worse.

I went to Scotland of the same mind as many people - I loved it, I'd visited it, I've worked with Scots and liked them. But there is much more to it than that. If it goes independent, I wouldn't touch it with a bargepole.
