I can't think of one American comedy sitcom I like. I like "The Office" but that isn't an American original.
I absolutely love Black Adder. And the fact that a beard and goatie makes Rowan Atkinson look kinda attractive is scary in itself.
I adore, simply adore A Bit of Fry and Laurie. That show was just so brilliant. I crack up every time I see Stephen Fry dressed up as an old lady and say with a completely straight face "People often mistake me for Luther Vandross." LOL I also love the Michael Jackson bit. And the "Be Nice" rap. Oh gosh! YouTube - Hugh Laurie & Stephen Fry - Be Nice
In my area (Michigan, U.S.) we had "Keeping Up Appearances" and "Waiting for God" on PBS for years. I always liked Keeping Up Appearances because I grew up in an upper middle class neighborhood full of Hyacinth Buckets. Now I mainly watch "Doctor Who" which isn't a comedy so much, but still a fantastic show.
I haven't read through the entire thread and I'm sure every show I mention will have been said before, but here is my list anyway....
The Young Ones
The Kenny Everett Video Show
Blackadder
Absolutely Fabulous
Red Dwarf (now my daughters favourite show, she is obsessed with it)
Monty Pythons Flying Circus (wasn't around for the original series but love it anyway)
Fawlty Towers
The Goodies
I guess it's easy to see I grew up in the 70s and 80s. There's probably a lot more that I haven't thought of, but those are my absolute favourites.
I really love Monty Python, Fawlty Towers, Red Dwarf and Keeping Up Appearances. Black Books is great too, but Bernard's style with customers and alcohol is too similar to me for me to be comfortable.
I could say the same about Father Jack in "Father Ted" as well really.
Oh, and "Goodness Gracious Me", a humorous look at Brit/Indian relations..it centred around a group of Indian people living in England, and I think it was meant to hold a mirror up to Brit society and race relations in a lighthearted way. For example, in an English restaurant, the group said they were "going out for an English" (as per the Brit expression "going out for an Indian) and discussions ensued as to how bland they required their food. "Oh, I don't want mine too bland"..."but you're in an English restaurant, you have to have it bland".
I like Comic Strip presents....
And I think Ben Elton and Richard Curtis is two of Britain's best comedy writers.
I also like to see Hugh Laurie play characters as Bertie Wooster and the prince in Blackadder.
I haven't trawled through all of this thread but I get the feeling that people tend to like British comedy from the past and there is not so much mention of modern stuff.
I know that's the case with me.
Modern British comedy seems to be something where they do a poor imitation of American comedy or a poor pastiche of former British greats.
They are also doing modern versions of Red Dwarf and Reggie Perrin- for goodness sake don't even try!!!
Chewin' the fat and Still game. I cant live without it. The best comedy ever
Not seen Chewin' the Fat yet, but Still Game is fantastic. Never had the recognition it deserves IMO. Dunno which character makes me laugh most. Victor, Jack, Boaby ( in the porn film !), Navid. Or perhaps Winston, when he kicks his false leg through the window ! Pished myself, as they say in Craiglang.
Loved Rab C, too. Played on the Govan stereotype but that was part of its appeal. Plus Jamesie Cotter looks a bit like my Dad !
haha maybe im just being too young here but mine are :
mighty boosh
dinnerladies (which im re-watching as i type!)
phoenix nights
blackadder
red dwarf
mr. bean
the young ones
to be honest pretty much anything makes me laugh!!! i do love family guy and american dad thanks america!!!
