They are increasing in numbers because if you are self employed you can put it through the books as business vehicle and save a huge amount of tax (over a 4x4/SUV say).
At least that's what it said on one of the motor shows on tv. Some bloke down my road has an imported American one but of course it's left hand drive which is why you tend to see more of the smaller Japanese utes (new word that I will now adopt, got to love those Aussies) because they also drive on the correct side of the road
We had some tailgate parties when i was over in SC. My boyfriends family all had their trucks out. My boyfriend is planning on buying a pick up here. Gotta love 'em

As for the Hilux, Top Gear found it the most indestructible car ever. I seem to remember they tried all sorts of things, and ended up putting it on top of a block of flats and then demolishing the flats. It still drove away afterwards!

Top Gear is an excellent show and I remember the Hilux Episode well, The wreck, Ended up being part of the shows set for a while, Mounted up the back.
