Why on earth isn't public transport free everywhere? (transportation, development, class)

I know it wouldn't stop may motorists from driving, but seriously, it makes total sense and the arguments against it aren't even worth answering. They're made by selfish capitalists who don't realise everything is CONNECTED. Motorists SHOULD bear some of the burden of trying to help the environment and society because we (yes, I admit I drive, but I live in a rural area where there is zero public transport) are mostly responsible for it. The subsidies needed would not be much...I think this should extend to better health care, childhood development etc for all. I'm sick of this free for all, only concerned about me and my family mentality that the West has invented. If we continue to think like this they'll be less for EVERYONE including our children.

Lol, aside from that, I find this whole snobby 'public transport is only for people who can't afford cars' attitude really annoying. Well, there you have it, with rising petrol prices you've got what you wanted.
In Europe and Asia you see business execs, doctors and lawyers using public transport (although yes, many of the rich do drive or are chauffered, but many professionals ride public transport and there is certainly no stigma attached to it. Same in Australia).

I agree, public transit should be free. Gavin Newson tried to push it through in San Francisco. The cost of collecting and processing fares probably eats up 50% of it anyway
