According to Transportation Weekly and cited in a New York Times article I just read, the median Democratic congressional district is 11 times more densely populated than the median Republican district.

Its decisions based on selfish incumbent motives to remain in office rather than cost-benefit analysis and big picture viewpoints that continue to dig us deeper into a long-term economic funk

What I don't understand, in reference to wburg's article particularly, is why so-called 'conservatives' want to force more and more people into one mode of transportation. Especially one that is, by necessity, so heavily subsidized. It seems incredibly antithetical to conservatism.

Because the government subsidies for that one mode of transportation mean an awful lot of money for the industries related to it. It's called "welfare for the rich," and plenty of conservatives just love it.
