Here's another weird one, one side of the semi seems to have been destroyed for the entrance of a condo leaving the other half standing awkwardly. Saint Patrick Street, Toronto, ON - Google Maps
Or the disadvantage ... An HOA wouldn't allow me to be able to tell people that my house is the twin next door to the one with the bright green shutters and awnings, of which my house has neither.

These (mosty) semi detached homes I think are getting into these problems because they were originally designed as a building with two units complementing each other

Or the other half was never built at all. That's not uncommon, either; there's one down the street from me. It does look goofy with windows on only one side.
Yes, it's the McMansion look, one of the least-appealing aspects of modern architecture. It's just hideous when the garage appears to be larger than the actual home, and is also given more prominence...
Call me old-fashioned, I crave a nice big porch in the front of my house, like the last house I owned in Phoenix, garage separate from house, to the back.

Now if they'd only bring back the alley in back!
The alley in back is great. Garbage and recycling for pick-up can go there instead of at the front curb. And it separates you more from your neighbour's back-yard on the other side of the lane.
It's a great short-cut if you're walking.
