Seven posts but who's counting lol.

As you can see the NYC area's rail system is very big and I left out Airtrain JFK, AirTrain Newark, Newark City subway, among others .

This goes more in depth of NYC's transportation systems:

And here's the map all together (immediate NYC area only):

DC has the Metro. It's the second busiest rapid transit system in the nation behind NYC's subway.

Daily Ridership: 801,400
Length: 106.3 miles
Stations: 86

Here's a current map of the Metro:

The Silver Line is currently under construction and the Purple Line is finishing up the planning:

These are the new street cars that DC has. They are laying the tracks down now:

I was actually just at a Metro training facility today practicing for fires or special rescues with the Metro. Here's a nice tribute video(documentary) that was released this week for the DCFD. We had a Metro crash this past summer that you probably heard of. 9 dead and almost 100 injured.

For all the rail nuts out there, here is the best website for information about city rail service:

UrbanRail.Net > America > All American Subway, Metrorail and Subte Systems

Here's the list of cities by their primary system. (In no particular order):

Heavy Rail Service (Subway):
  1. New York City
  2. Boston
  3. Chicago
  4. Washington D.C.
  5. Newark
  6. Philadelphia
  7. Atlanta
  8. Miami
  9. Los Angeles
  10. Cleveland
  11. San Francisco
  12. Baltimore

Light Rail (including street car systems):
  1. Buffalo
  2. Charlotte
  3. Dallas
  4. Denver
  5. Detroit
  6. Houston
  7. Jacksonville
  8. Las Vegas
  9. Minneapolis/St. Paul
  10. Phoenix
  11. Pittsburgh
  12. Portland
  13. Sacramento
  14. St. Louis
  15. Salt Lake City
  16. San Diego
  17. San José
  18. Seattle

Sadly enough, I think Los Angeles will be the last subway system built in America...unless the federal government or some deep pocketed company steps in

NYC also has a few expansions on the way.

Most notably the 2nd Avenue subway (which has been on the way more or less for the past several decades):

And though it isn't a rail line, it should be noted that Staten Island does have a public transit ferry operated by the same agency running to and from Manhattan.

The 2nd Ave Subway is under construction and will be open next decade (hopefully). Other rail projects in the region of note:

ARC rail tunnel between NJ and Penn Station (under construction)
East Side Access tunnel for LIRR to Grand Central (under construction)
JFK Rail Link from Lower Manhattan (on hold indefinitely)
Extension of the 7 Subway to Hudson Yds (on hold)
Hudson-Bergen Light Rail extension to 8th Street in Bayonne (under construction)
Newark-Elizabeth Rail Link (planning, on-hold)
Northern Branch Light Rail (EIS)
Cross-Harbor Freight Rail Tunnel between Jersey City and Brooklyn (EIS)
Lackawanna NJT Rail Extension (EIS)
West Trenton Line commuter rail service (planning)
Meadowlands Rail Spur (recently completed)
Extension of commuter rail in CT to Westerly, RI and to Springfield, MA (EIS)
42nd Street Light Rail (a dream)
Reactivation of Red Hook Streetcars (planning)
North Shore Staten Island Light Rail (planning)

And lots of new stations, station renovations/overhauls, etc. Some of the more notables include:
Fulton Street Station
WTC PATH Station
Harrison PATH Station

The Staten Island Ferry is actually not operated by the same agency. The MTA operates subways, buses, LIRR and MNR. The SI Ferry is operated by NYCDOT, the agency responsible for the city's streets, bike lanes, etc.

I also like the Roosevelt Island Tramway: world.nycsubway.org/Around New York/Roosevelt Island Tramway

There have been proposals to develop a more modern tramway between South Ferry and Governors Island, and continuing to Red Hook, Brooklyn: http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/...gondola583.jpg

^The 2nd Avenue line hasn't been under construction for a few decades, it's going on 90 years now.

Nice! Thanks for posting. I work in public transportation in NYC and I occasionally attend training courses with people from transit agencies in other parts of the country. It's interesting to me to see what else is out there.
