is it worth living in vancouver rather than portland to escape the taxes in oregon? i read that vancouver was like "van-tucky," which doesn't sound like the liberal haven portland is... it it suburban and conservative? i also read the traffic across the bridge to portland is a pain. can you bike it?

Certainly worth living and WORKING in WA, and there are decent places for each.
If you get any income from Oregon, you will pay taxes to Oregon. (Whether you live in WA or OR or Tahiti)

For the true Portland 'Goth- weird -youth experience', you need to live immersed there and deal with the pain. (It is pretty spendy and low wages and plenty of crime, but 'worth' the experience to many.)

You can bike the 205 bridge ezr for commute. Getting across I-5 is not so bad, if you can find a quick route from I-5 bridge to the Delta Park / Expo MAX station. I'm afraid the walking / biking route is a bit convoluted for that 1/2 mile stretch. I have an 80 yr old friend that daily bikes the round trip (I-5 and I-205 and going over St Johns (HWY 30 into DWTN Portland) so it must be possible but is not fast.

The Ctran buses are the best way (from downtown or Fisher's Landing transit center). Just make your commute non-rush-hour. Then is is only a few minutes.

East side vancouver (Near Fisher's) has many rentals and decent jobs. It is further to DWTN Portland (I-205 and I-84)
Downtown Vancouver can be trendy and can be seedy. It is closer to DWTN Portland (I-5), but traffic (and MAX) moves slower. Off hours you can commute in under 10 minutes. During rush hour... it will be an hour. (sometimes more)

Most of Vancouver feels suburban to me. Yes, it is more conservative than Portland. It is quite family oriented. For those of who are retired, it is supposed to cheaper than living in PDX.

The name you used for Vancouver is a slur. Why would you use it unless you wanted to make someone mad?

Thanks for everyone's input, since I'm mulling over the move from Ill. The more I read, the more I want to be there!

The OP is on Portland forum and seems very nice. I don't think she meant anything negative by her comment.

Not angry or anything, but surely the term is obviously not nice to use with residents of Vancouver?

Lol There definitely are Vancouver residents that use that term. In fact I originally heard it from a Vancouver resident. It can either be a deprecating remark or a "slur", just depends on the context.

uhee, sorry! yes, i didn't mean it as a slur to either vancouver people or kentucky people. like i said, it's something i heard/read from another forum. just trying to get a better idea about what living in vancouver would be like. i still want a city feel.

thanks for sticking up for me, yankeemama! i definitely wasn't trying to offend. i thought maybe i could live in vancouver and work in washington to save money on taxes, but my main draw to vancouver is to be near portland. though from what i'm what reading, i'd probably be better off living in portland if i want the real portland experience.

There is plenty good to be said about being far enough from Portland (Vancouver) to enjoy both Portland and Vancouver more. Portland (and Oregonians) can be a bit much.

Really depends on your taste / social desires.

Vancouver is NO PORTLAND (thank goodness). I sometimes go to Portland a few times / day, and often a few times / week... but it serves it's purpose for me 'from-a-distance' as it has for 30+ yrs. Nice to have so handy, nice to have at a distance.

If you are youthful and desiring the life of Portland it would be best to be there... but... since I am 'Stealth'... I would live and work in Vancouver, and spend much of the rest of my time in Portland. If you have a well paying career in WA... You can get a Part-time room to share with a friend in Portland and do it QUITE cheap (compared to living and working there). For OUTDOOR life / hiking / recreation... WA can provide a faster escape. Downhill skiing is in OR, XC and windsurfing / kite-boarding in either. If you are 'outdoor centric'. Hood River is a great place to be (1 hr to Portland).

If you are GOTH... Portland is your kinda place

IL... BURR...(-10f tonight) BTDT.
I do like my $19.90 flights to PDX > San Diego for sun!! You might enjoy that too!

no way! $19.90 flights from portland to san diego?? what airline? i have a job in longview, but was going to live in vancouver. i heard there's a big drug problem in longview, which would make my job as a pharmacist kinda hard. and i heard it's dangerous, which doesn't sound safe for a female...

kite-surfing? augh! that sounds awesome!!
