My room mate and I are two mid-twenties, college graduate females looking to relocate to Brattleboro this summer. She is a graduate student in Keene, and I will be working part time and studying for graduate school next year. We both have to commute to the Northampton MA area weekly, and Brattleboro seems like the perfect intermediary between Keene and the Pioneer Valley. Neither of us want to have to commute more than an hour (give or take) in either direction.

We have the ability to pay about $1200 a month for a 2BR place, which seems to be more than enough as far as renting in the area goes. The thing is, we CANNOT seem to find a place. We have SCOURED craigslist, calling every 2BR listed and were only able to view two. I've also even posted my own "seeking housing" classified, proving fruitless. We've googled to the end of the internet and found nothing. All of the realtors in the area seem to only deal in houses for sale.

I know this is a smaller town, but this is starting to seem a little ridiculous! Does anyone have any advice or resources for finding housing in the Brattleboro area?

Not to discourage you, but there is no cache of rentals in some newspaper or on some bulletin board that you haven't yet checked. The truth is that there are few rentals in Brattleboro. We turned down a good job there a few years back because we couldn't find a suitable place to live. A friend of ours who lived in Brattleboro for three years had to move because his landlord wanted the apartment for himself and his wife after their children left home. He looked for three months but couldn't find another apartment at all suitable and finally gave up on Brattleboro. It's a shame, because it's a great place. I'd keep looking, because you might get lucky, but I'd also cast a wider net and consider other areas.
