I'm trying to buy winter tires online to ship to Vermont. Walmart only has ship to store and none of the stores have an auto center. It says New Hampshire stores are the closest.

If you were buying tires online and wanted them shipped to your home, where would you buy them?

Tirerack.com. I've bought from them a half dozen times: best prices, quick shipping, great selection. Have them installed by anyone you want once you have them.

I used to use tirerack but in the end the hassle isn't worth it. By the time you add shipping, then drag them down to a shop who doesn't want to install them because you didn't buy the tires from them, there isn't a lot to save.

Set of 4 Blizzacks on closeout from tirerack- $90 plus shipping. Shipping is $65..
Mount/balance. $15/tire or more = Total $483+

I bought a set of 4 Coopers for $483.98 with free rotations AND an alignment from Vermont Tire. I don't know if Blizzacks are really better than Weathermaster ST/2's - maybe , maybe not. All taxes included there.

You could get 4 cheaper tires for $85*4 + $65 shipping with a $40 rebate. That's $365 plus m/b $425... still doesn't include alignment or free rotations and local shops will have cheaper tires than the Coopers too, so you could probably buy similar cheaper tires for same price locally.

Do you guys find its less expensive to buy tires online and have the shop install them, as opposed to just finding snow tires through the shop themselves?

I don't know where you're located, but the St. Albans Wal Mart has an auto center.

I bought tires from Amazon.com, and had them shipped to my home. I also ordered wheels from Amazon.com, and had them shipped directly to my mechanic.

Vianor (which used to be Goss Tire) has quite a few locations across Vermont. I'd check them out.

My thanks to everyone for sharing your experiences and ideas. I found a tire center in the area that has tires for a great price that includes mounting and balancing. They're willing to let me pay for the tires over the phone too.

The last set of tires I bought (Michelin Defenders for my Prius) I went to the new Tire place in West Lebanon NH, and they matched Tire Rack's price, saved me a lot of money. I best most of the chains do that.
