From an article I read it stated that overall the New England GDP grew by 1.3 percent, Led by Vermont, which posted a 1.9 percent increase, 22nd fastest nationally. And the population of Vermont is what, about 630k? In 2012, there were over 91 million people in Ethiopia. Hardly a fair comparison in any way, shape, or form.

Other New England states were ranked as follows. Massachusetts’ GDP grew 1.6 percent, 28th-fastest nationally; Rhode Island increased 1.4 percent, 33rd nationally; Connecticut, New Hampshire and Maine all increased 0.9 percent, and were ranked 39th, 40th and 41st, respectively.

Also note that even though North Dakota was ranked 1st, with a GDP growth of 9.7 percent, their 2013 GDP was still the 5th lowest at $56.3 billion despite their amazing growth with an over 3 percent increase in population in just one year and the lowest unemployment rate in the nation. Wyoming, who posted a 7.6 percent GDP growth, were still 2nd lowest in 2013 GDP at $45.4 billion. And that with more people coming to the state and a lower than average unemployment rate. But both states are also small on population.

It's trendy not to work doncha know. Vermont doesn't want anyone moving here who actually works for a living. That would be SO gauche. Retirees and welfare bums are the only people moving here and the only type of new Vermonter the administration considers desirable. Anything else would cause pollution and / or traffic.

I know aj240 it isn't I live in Connecticut so our population is about 3,750,000. With the same GDP of Portagal or 225 billion dollars yet Portagul has 10.5 million people. Same goes for Missouri and is comparable to Nigeria yet:

If a recent report (IBM Said Near Deal With Globalfoundries for Chip-Making - Bloomberg) turns out to be accurate, most of the 4000 workers at IBM Essex Junction will soon be out of a job.

Global Foundries, the purported buyer, is only after IBM's intellectual property and a few engineers.

And, of course, shutting down Vermont Yankee won't help the cause of keeping IBM in VT, both in terms of price and voltage stability, which is critical to the manufacturing process.

FrugalYankee, your words sound harsh and out of line, but you make a good point. We need to look at the bottom line. There are more and more good paying businesses that are leaving the state and more and more of our prized students who are leaving the state.
The low unemployment rate and job growth we have had do not mean much. If you look at the jobs created, they are primarily lower paying service jobs. Nothing to brag about. Look at what has left already, Tubbs, Merrell, Karhu, Mad River Canoe, Isis, Garmont and these are just outdoor companies. Just in the past few months there was Kennametal, Vermont Flexible Tubing Co, Plasan Carbon Composites, Huber Huber + Suhner, the IBM layoff just to name a few and we can't forget Vermont Yankee. The lost income from that one employer is staggering. The operation of Yankee through 2032 would have resulted in more than $2 billion in payroll, the state would collect in excess of $227 million in tax revenues and local governments would collect another $67 million in property tax revenues. Disposable income of all Vermont residents would have been $55.8 million higher than otherwise due to operation of Vermont Yankee. Our worst business enemy is now next door. NYS has more tax and business incentives than most people could shake a stick at. They are one of the fastest growing states in the country for business growth. I would not be surprised if Globalfoundries Inc closed the Essex plant and moved to NY. They already have a location in Albany. Moving more of their business there may give them a better tax deal yet.
After the depressing Business outlook, we have the heart of the problem our state refuses to address. "The brain drain." Vermont ranks at the bottom nationally for the percentage of its citizens between the ages of 25 and 29, and at the top in the percentage aged 50 to 54. We now have the highest percentage of high school grads who leave the state for college and work and despite the more than 20,000 young people who flock into Vermont each year to attend one of 24 schools, about 80 percent of those college grads move away within one year of graduation.

A GDP of $22 billion in a state with only 600,000 residents yields a per capita GDP that is higher than 21 of the 36 countries that have better health care systems than the US does. Here they are, with the proportion of their GDP they spend on their health care. (Vermont spends about 19%; the US spends 17.6%)

The Kaiser Family Foundation lists the percentage each spends for health care. Those countries are: France, 11.7%; Belgium, 10.5%; Denmark, 11.1%; the United Kingdom, 9.6%; Andorra, 7.%, Japan, 9.2%; Finland, 9.0%; San Marino, 7.2%; Israel, (7.7%), Saudi Arabia, 4.0%; New Zealand, 10.1%; Spain, (9.6%; Oman, 2.7%; Italy, 9.5%; Cyprus, 7.4%; Greece, 10.8%; Portugal, 10.7%; Chile, 7.4%; Argentina, 8.3%; Colombia, 6.5%; and the United Arab Emirates, 3.7%.

In terms of per capita GDP, Vermont ranks 94th among the world's countries.

I don't think there's any reason to go selling us short by pleading poverty.
