Hi, I'm Googabee.

I'm from CT and like to visit Vermont from time to time. There aren't that many opportunities for me to enjoy some recreational target shooting/plinking around here. There are a few public ranges, but I don't really care for that formal range environment. I'd like to find some "middle of nowhere" type of outdoor spot where I can be free to have some responsible fun for an hour or two, without bothering anyone of course. Something in southern VT not far off I-91 would be ideal.

I plan to call some local parks departments and perhaps the state police, but if anyone has an idea I'd appreciate it.

I think you'll get better luck with the State Police vs. local parks & rec. Have you tried contacting anyone from the public ranges for ideas?

Many areas in the green mt national forest are good for shooting, it's allowed unless otherwise stated/posted in the particular area (but you must be off trails, don't fire at or on or near bodies of water, and no incendiary ammo) but find a spot where people won't be camping/etc., fire towards a tall hill for a back stop, and look around a ways to be sure the area is safe for shooting. The state forests and parks are more heavily regulated believe it or not than the national forests (national forests are not to be confused with national parks) and several towns/cities forbid discharging a firearm in city/town limits. Basically, unless you make yourself annoying or dangerous to others or wildlife or the forest in general, you shouldn't have a problem. So the less popular spots are best for this...

I'm like you, I don't care much for organized shooting ranges and being surrounded by other people when I'm practicing. Most of the real serious/important shooting I do (hunting that is) is done in the woods, so I figure it's more realistic practice for me to be in the woods anyways...
