I live in Colchester and work at UVM so feel free to send any questions my way. What part of Colchester are you in? My daughter goes to Porters Point School which is the K-2 down in Mallets Bay. I can't tell you enough how much we LOVE the school.

We swim all of the time in the lake in Colchester. It's very easy to find out if the beaches are closed and it doesn't happen all of the time. We also love Sandbar beach which is up closer to the Islands (about 15 min) way and that never closes as it's out of the day and not as enclosed so the water isn't as stagnant.

Welcome to Colchester- it's a wonderful town and a great proxmity to UVM.

Julie

Hey Julie! Thanks for your input. We are pretty much on the Colchester/Winooski border on Malletts Bay Ave.

I think Colchester will be a great town as well. I just hope they are good about plowing when the snow comes. I still haven't figured out how I'll be commuting to school (be there by 8am) since my partner will have our sole vehicle for transportation.

MRVphotog said it wasn't safe to swim in the lake around Colchester. I haven't done any research yet, but I'd be interested in some government postings. I am not a good swimmer but my partner and I definitely want to teach our son early on. It would be horrible for either of us to get sick or something worse.

Julie, how old is your daughter? Our son is only 3 years old but while I'm still in medical school he will be in kindergarten. I haven't heard of the Porters Point School but I've just been bogged down in researching preschools. We definitely wanted to LIVE in a town that had a great school district though (I was adviced this was Essex and Colchester. South Burlington, too, but expensive town to rent in).

Welcome to Colchester- it's a wonderful town and a great proxmity to UVM.

As Julie and I pointed out in previous posts the problem is mainly with the bays north of Btown and they do test the water often so if the levels are ok, swimming is fine.

Here is some info
