It has its critics and downfalls, but I find the game, especially the Jimmy DLC, lots of fun. Awesome classic soundtrack, cool cars, lots of shooting. I hope Mafia 3 is made!
I didn't know what to expect with Mafia 2 but I greatly enjoyed it. I wish it would have been more open world with more side missions that would have just made it a GTA clone. I liked that you could walk down the street and listen in on conversations NPCs were having with each other. Sure they were scripted but you don't find that in most games unless they are required for the plot. I also liked that the first part of the game started in the snowy winter.
The main thing I didn't like was that cops would come after you for speeding. I also didn't like the whole section of the game in prison where you just seemed to have to do several hand to hand combat missions. That got kind of boring. But overall, I definitely enjoyed the game.
Mafia 2 had one of the best themed environments as far as the music, architecture, characters and so on... It really felt like a Mafia film set in the 40s and 50s where you have the old Italian neighborhood or urban hoods--and including the interior of buildings you could walk inside for missions. The plot was actually more engaging than most of them--you actually had some interesting twists and character development as opposed to a lot similar games where the plot is basically advance up the crime family ladder by doing missions for one boss than an other boss and so on(A lot of GTA plot points feel similar). What it lacked was what other's have commented--that it didn't have a lot of open world stuff to do(LA Noir was the same way). But it was a fun game to go through, though I remember getting through it relatively fast.
Mafia 3 is in development--not sure if they'll move on to the 1960s or later. Personally I think a 1960s/70s game would be cool--give it sort of a Goodfellas/Donnie Brasco-era vibe. Have it start in the early 1960s with the whole swinging Rat Pack/lounge era and have it end up in the drugged-out disco era of the late 1970s. Maybe set it in a new city or have missions also set in sort of Las Vegas or Atlantic City casino area...
I got the game maybe 2 years ago on a Steam sale for $12... I played it then I got stuck in the stamp robbery mission. So I quit playing until today. I watched this video, then I easily conquered the stamps mission. But for selling the stamps I was 2 gas stations short. At least I'm not stuck in the game anymore and now I can play it further.
With my Geforce 570 HD I play it at 2560 x 1600 resolution and get about 37 fps.

I loved that mission. It was possibly my favorite in the game simply because I loved sneaking around that building trying not to get caught. It did take me a long time to figure out how to turn off the alarm, though.
I was stuck at the same spot for a bit too, but the magic of YouTube fixed it for me as well. I fired the game back up and playing through Jimmy's Vendetta right now, collecting cars and cracking skulls! lol
I got Mafia 2 when released on Stream on August 2010 and I loved it.
