Basically Premiere Pro will not accept MKV files, which I was assigned to edit. I googled it and there is several instruction on how to do it that I tried. But when I do it, the still will not be accepted, and is not even play-able at all after that.

Is there a certain way, that works at all?

Okay thanks. I already tried that article though, and it also did not work, and the file is unplay-able.

Well, I am not an expert, but I have been editing digital video for over 20 years and I never encountered or heard of the MKV files. But then, I am not an expert...

Here is the site of the creators of the MKV "format/container", "Matroska the extensible, open source, open standard Multimedia container": https://www.matroska.org/

Good luck!

I've been using Handbrake for about two years now to convert files to .mp4 and it works with most filetypes. It is a free open source program.

I have two programs that will convert .mkv to .mp4

NCH Video Pad Video Editing Software. Download Free Video Movie Editor

WinX HD Video Converter https://www.winxdvd.com/hd-video-converter/

There are many others. Both of these are not free, but have free trial periods. They are excellent, easy-to-use programs. (WinX HD Video Converter is useful because it can capture video streams from almost any site, NCH Video Pad is good if you do a lot of editing)

For those who never heard of .mkv files, they are an open-source container similar to .avi or .mp4, but has several advantages over both. I use it for editing a lot myself, before converting it to .vob (for making a DVD) or .mp4 (for YouTube) A lot of my archived video collection is in .mkv

Handbrake is one of the popular PC programs out there. Almost a standard.

I never heard of mkv files either until less than a year ago. Too bad since I have over 100 DVD backups in the original format which I wished were mkv.

I would suggest researching Virtualdub and the six gazillion plugins it can utilize like this one which should allow you to opne MKV. It's not a one click wonder program that often screw videos up but is limitless in capabilities for processing video if you take the time to learn how to use it.

Welcome to virtualdub.org! - virtualdub.org

Important, convert to lossless format like HuffyUV. Use that as source to make your edits in Premeire, export to desired format should be the last step.
