Hello! I’m a single person (age in 50s) working as a Fed professional in DC; closest Metro stops are Capitol South and Union Station. After several years of commuting by Metro from North Bethesda, and a recent job change, I am looking for a housing change and would like to try VA. Can you recommend a community where I might be able to rent (and, in a year or so, hopefully buy) a townhouse or a small detached house. Looking for a place relatively safe, friendly, doesn’t have as much big-city craziness/fast pace (I live a quiet life) -- and perhaps has an art/music community? Hoping for commute under 45 mins. each way (I do drive but can't park at work). Re trains I am wondering if the VRE would be better to take in than the Metro. I can work a 4-day-a-week schedule. Having developed a stress-related health condition I am hoping to improve my living and commuting situation. ANY help appreciated!

Fredericksburg will have less big-city crazyness and you can take the VRE, although I think it's closer to 1 or 1.5 hours. Occoquan might have what you're looking for, and be less than 45 min by train.
Try posting in the Northern Virginia forum.
