And what do you call 'low cost of living'. That can mean different things to different people. (as-in, how low?)

I'm curious myself. My husband is retiring next year and we are planning on moving from Chicago to Virginia (he's tired of the snow and the high cost of living in Illinois). We are looking around the Floyd area or somewhere close to Christiansburg/Blacksburg as I will still be looking for work.

Thanks! It's a little scary picking up and moving to a new place. I appreciate any input from anyone who lives there.

I would pick Charlotte or Raleigh area in North Carolina personally. Just an opinion. You could go with Culpeper Va. or the Warrenton Va area and still work in DC, i do. There is a HUGE job market for just about everything here.

I'm from the area you mentioned. The cost of living is fairly low yes but however there is not a diverse job market in those areas. Depends on what type of job you are looking for. Roanoke has the best job market of any area that is near the places you mentioned. Also you will get snow in the winter in those areas it is four distinct seasons.
