I assume this matters to people who live in Virginia. Otherwise, who cares?

Northern VA isn't southern but the rest of the state is. Unfortunately the whitebread culture of northern VA overshadows the state's true culture.

I consider all of the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area to be part of the northeastern United States.

So that includes most of Northern Virginia, I think.

Northern Virginia/Washington D.C. is northeastern U.S., anything below that is Southeast.

According to the link, it's hardly official. The Wikipedia article says that "some" definitions of the Northeastern United States include Virginia. That statement includes a reference to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, which includes Virginia in its "Northeast Region" for administrative purposes, probably because it's easier to serve Virginia from their Northeastern Region office instead of their Atlanta office.

So pointing to one federal agency that administers Virginia from a Northeastern office does not make Virginia itself a Northeastern state culturally.

There might be reasons to argue that Virginia is Northeastern, but this isn't good evidence.

An entry on Wikipedia makes something is official?

There is a map with the states shaded in. It doesn't get much more official than that.

I disagree as it pertains to not only Virginia, but its placement among the 11 or so other states in the American Northeast.

And in my opinion it should not be included. Outside of the DC suburbs, Virginia's culture is so far different than the rest of the northeast that it shouldn't even be a question. Virginia is a southern state.
