I am still deciding whether to relocate my family to accept a position around the Dulles area. I do not want to raise my daughters (13, 12 and 10) in a real busy area where the schools are very large. Their education would be our first priority. I was looking at the Front Royal area and was hoping someone could give me some feedback on the Warren County Schools. I would also appreciate any other suggestions of nice areas to raise our daughters where there is a nice home town feel.

Where in Ohio? I was born in Kettering.

Northern VA has quite a few high schools in the top 100 in the nation. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12532678/site/newsweek/ (broken link) If you want the home town feel, I'd suggest South Riding or Ashburn. There is quite a bit of info on this site about those two areas.

We are from Columbus. After looking at realestate.com I thought the Front Royal area seemed like it was a little more affordable and farther West which would keep my husband further from the trafffic, which he hates. Just curious about the schools. I did look at the Ashburn area while over there and that was nice but still a little too close to all of the congestion. I will have to check out South Riding. Thanks.

If you want to live in a masssive, sprawling, LA-style housing development of faux mansions and vinyl siding, South Riding fits the bill. Problem with the Loudoun Co. school system is that it's growing so fast (ave. 1 new high school per year) that the school population is being constantly re-districted. It is not unusual for kids to change schools 3 or 4 times from 8th grade to 12th. Five percent of the entire school construction budget for the entire U.S. is spent in Loudoun County, virginia.

Warren County school system is not my area of expertise but I have a generally bad impression of Front Royal. Warren is a blue-collar county. Instead of taking advantage of their bountiful natural resources (Shenandoah National Park, prime agricultural soils) the "geniuses" that lead Warren Co. government have gone down the road of economic development by attracting heavy industries.

Two small towns that may work for your situation are Berryville and Marshall. Berryville-Clarke County is a one high school district. I was just through Berryville a few hours ago and I'm always impressed. You won't find big-city conveniences but it has a supermarket, a coffee shop, a few restaurants, professional offices, etc. You can go from the east side of Berryville to Dulles without a single stoplight. Traffic will be heavy, but lots of people do it.

Well, if you're looking to make your kids junkies or knocked up by the time they get a driver's license, Warren County is a good place to start. Seriously, though, I would look at Winchester. The city schools there are better than Frederick County, but the county ain't bad. Warren is to be avoided.
