Default Rural VA vs. Rural North Carolina

We are considering moving to the northwest part of North Carolina, then realized that we might want to consider living across the border in Virginia.

The specific area would be, on the North Carolina side: Alleghany, Surry, Wilkes.

On the Virginia side: Grayson, Washington, Smyth & Carroll.

I know very little about the VA side of the border, so any help is appreciated.
