I have a similar post in the TN threads...
My husband and I live (are renting) in Jersey and the more we look into buying a house, the more we realize we have to move! Here is what we are looking for: Simple single family home (3 bed/ 1-2 bath and basement) with some land to it (between 2-10 acres) and not too far from a city (we don't want to be too secluded). Any information would be great (ie sales taxes, property taxes, ect). Also, we would want to homeschool...is that normally done in the area? If anyone has any links to great websites for info on the roanoke area, please let me know...Thanks so much! Also, does anyone have any opinions of which is the better state to live...TN or VA.

there is a lot of info here on all the areas - do a search for roanoke and you will get many hits.

I question the wisom of narrowing down a move so important to 2 areas based on the I'net - have you visitied these places? Nothing wrong with them - but you MUST VISIT, many times, to make a decision.

Taxes are by legal jurisdiction - no way to compare until you decide on a specific area. you can go online to all the government websites and see the tax rate, or use something like www.realtor.com (broken link) and enter zip codes and house specs. what price range - you didn;t mention and it is critical to know. what about a job(s) - where will you work?

So much missing info. Start with a search - the VA v TN question is also asked often - you will get many opinions.

Home schooling is universal

We are looking into taking a vacation to the Roanoke valley around Sept this year, but I was wondering if it would be worth it to go to Tenn. too, and if so, what areas we would want to visit. Its very hard to decide a good place to live by what I find on the internet, but I'm so glad I found this site! Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions, I appreciate it!
Anyway, I'm looking for a home in the 100-175,000 range, is that possible to get with 5 acres?
Does anyone know the website that has good information about the Roanoke Valley?

You can check out my personal horse farm blog (I live in Boones Mill, Franklin County, a 25 minute drive from downtown Roanoke):

www.pecorfamily.com

But more important links are:

www.visitfranklincountyva.com
www.visitroanokeva.com
www.greenways.org
www.roanoke.com
http://www.virginia.org/site/cities....ality=Franklin

You can just copy/paste these addresses into your web browser.

If you want some specific suggestions of where to visit let me know here or via PM what your general ideal lifestyle would be (proximity to downtowns, small towns, trails, fishing, hiking, arts etc).

Cheers,

Sean
