That post is highly suspect. He sounds very cranky. It's so hard to find the grain of truth when a post is that biased and anecdotal. What I gathered from that negative review was that he moved to a very remote and mountainous region where his skills were not as desirable. He spoke poorly of the culture and the people in SW Virginia and did so in an elitist tone, so clearly he moved into an area where the people made him uncomfortable. I'd just file that away in the highly suspect folder and weigh it against the totality of comments regarding Mendota.

Good advice. Thanks, Sean.
I'm just so leary of "the grass is not always greener" and don't want to make any mistakes should I be fortunate enough to move to VA one day.

That's one person's opinion...and we all know what what other people's opinions are worth.
I have spent a lot of time up there....have many relatives in the neighboring counties, have gotten to know and appreciate the locals and their way of life. A place is what you make of it and I for one like to look for the good and make the most of wherever I am.
I very much look forward to my retirement years in my log home in the hills of Virginia - land of my roots.

I agree. I'm now searching Scott County for possibilities, Gate City, Weber City, Nickelsville, etc. It looks like a gorgeous place to live. Thanks for putting the idea in my brain.

You will never want to leave the Mendota, Abingdon area
Hey there,
I ran across this post looking for home sites for a friend and read all about the Mendota area and Abingdon and Bristol areas. Oh, the memories!
Let me just say for anyone who hasn't been there it is amazing! I grew up there and would give anything for my son to do the same. I know live in Florida where to say the least is the worst place to raise a family. To much violence and racism. When you go to eat or buy something at a store there is no thank you or is there anything else you need? NO, they just look at you (if you are lucky) like you are stupid.
Abingdon was my hometown for 23 years. There is no comparison. Once you get there and find your way around (which doesn't take long) you will fall in love with it's small town charm. It is the only place where you can get a smile and thank you when you order food and watch out, someone may just open a door for you! The hospitality can't be beat! You will find "good people" that you will never forget.
I wish you all the best in your moves or future moves and hope that you will be as proud to call Abingdon home as I am.
I take my son there to visit once a year so hopefully I can instill the good values that come with small town living!

The area you mention is exactly where I'm dreaming of relocating. I only hope it becomes a reality and the sooner the better. Floyd appeals to me for it's rural charm. I have heard one can only see the mountains in the distance, but I like the way you describe it better.

No its actually not true that you can only see the mountains from a distance. In floyd you are actually living on a mountain. My question is what are you doing for work? I know a lot of people may dream of moving to the mountains but its tough finding good jobs there.

Well, I'll probably have to wait until I retire. Right now, I work in a high school office as secretary to the Assistant Principal, but that's not to say I couldn't get such a job in the Floyd area if I don't wait for retirement, which is about another 8 years away. My problem is leaving my grown children. They want to say in Texas....Ugh!!
If I hadn't left the Texas School System in 1991, I could have retired this past June. I'm so ticked at myself for not planning well but at the time, it seemed like the right thing to do.
I just loved the area....Check, VA in Floyd County was just one delightful spot in which I fell in love.
If I win the lotto of which I need to play, I would move so quickly. That way I could fly to Texas every month and see my kids or fly them to me. I'm dreaming, of course.

living in Floyd
I moved to Floyd about a year ago from Florida and absolutely love it. If you want the quiet country life then this is the place to be. But yet you are only 20-30 minutes from Roanoke or Christiansburg. But if you have teenagers the really isnt alot for them to do.

There are still great land buys in Giles county, VA... and you will be close enough to any shopping you need in Christiansburg..
