My husband will be attending graduate school in DC and I hope to accept a teaching job in Springfield. We have one car – he’ll be taking the metro and I’ll be driving to work. We’re in our 20’s and found an apartment in Pentagon City which seems to be a fun place to live and an easy metro commute for him, but how’s the drive from there to Springfield for my commute? Would I be driving in the opposite direction of traffic, or is the traffic bad in all directions? I’d like to have some sort of idea before signing a lease and accepting the job.

traffic going to work won't be too bad. coming back may be a different story. in the morning you'll have a reverse commute. in the afternoon all the DC/MD folks use 395 north which will cause a few delays.

Why not get an apartment in Springfield? The metro goes all the way down to there, and you'd be closer to work... and I bet the rent would be a lot less. Just an idea anyways. But yeah, the traffic should be fine for you, you'll be going against traffic for the most part, though there is always a chance of a random back-up.

Sounds like you have a good situation set up! I wouldn't worry much about driving on 395 North in evening rush hour, I don't do it regularly, but a few times a month and have never had a problem.

i lived in 22206, just down from pentagon city, and at times, had to go down 395 between Springfield and Woodbridge even though my job was in DC...

it's not bad going south in the AM, but I do remember a few back ups coming back into town -- but most of it was right before the mixing bowl... even so it wasn't ever bad

the surface roads in and around springfield can get bad in the afternoons

FWIW, stay in Arlington/Pentagon City if you can, it's great for young folks...
