I live in southern Howard County. I got a job with NoVa Community College which I would like to accept as I would like to work at a learning-oriented organization and in a relaxed environment. I understand there are small # of people who commute from Howard County to Northern VA, but how feasible is it if you start early like about 6 in the morning? From southern Howard County to NoVa campus, it will be around 40 miles one-way, and during the rush hours, traffic will be a problem. Is this manageable up to about 6 months? I will eventually have to move down to Fairfax county, but moving now may not be affordable for me....

What other way of commutes would be avaialbe from Howard County to NoVa campus down in Fairfax county if you don't drive your own car?

Thank you for you help.

You haven't specified which campus of NoVa you meant, but, yes it is feasible to do nearly anything for 6 months. I have known people who did such a commute regularly. It is easier if you start early in the morning. One of the few alternatives is to take a Howard County cummuter bus to DC, then Metro and transfer to a bus. There is (or was) also a Metro bus route from Gaithersburg to Fairfax. I can guarantee that driving your own car is normally faster.

That's going to be a rough commute. Still, 6 months is probably something i could put up with.

Scout several routes. Listen to the traffic reports, start at 4AM. I am working several jobs in NOVA, and whenever I need to be there, I plan to be on the road no later than 430AM. And that is for a 6AM start. By the way, learn where all the McDonalds are located, never know when nature will call. I am coming out of Burtonsville.

Good luck, lots of night construction going on.

I dont want to discourage you, but I think it would be one heck of a commute. I live in the lower part of Alexandria and commute to a location near that campus. Sometimes it takes me 30 minutes, but it has taken me up to 1 hour 45 minutes, depending on traffic. I dont know what other people's experience is, but there seem to be many accidents on 236. For six months, I think anything is possible. Just get ready for the traffic.
