I'm considering moving to MD to be near friends. My best friend lives in Linthicum. I most likely have an incoming job offer in Bethesda. I would like to live and work within an hour of her, it makes no sense to move cross country and be a 2 hour commute away. Basically I want to be close enough that if I ask her if she wants to watch a movie, the answer is never "I can't deal with the traffic tonight". How bad would that commute be? And are there reasonably priced, not too rural areas inbetween to live?

Budget? Priorities? Bethesda to Linthicum is a 45 min drive w/o traffic and in the AM from Bethesda, you are going against the flow of traffic.

I'm a fairly successful software engineer, so budget isn't much of a problem. I'd be looking for 1 bedroom apartments, things like schools don't matter to me (single). Really my priority is minimizing commute time to and from work, being close enough to my friend that I never think "Is it worth the drive to see her", and convenient shopping/restaurants/entertainment.

Columbia, MD in Howard county is good mid-way point between the two. It will take you about 30 mins to get to Bethesda and 25 minutes to Linthicum. Columbia is a nice/safe town with a pretty large shopping mall, tons of restaurants, etc...
