"Breaking News"

I'm not a big fan of mainstream news; however, anytime I hear the phrase "Breaking News", all of my focus is placed on that TV set. So in tonight's news those very same words were spoken, but this time about a storm; a nasty one at that! I've been living in MD since 1995, so I anytime I hear a report regarding a "a nasty storm on the East Coast" I always equate that to The Gulf or other Southern states. Apparently (and very much to my surprise), this "Hurricane Sandy" has decided to change things up and is planning its trip up North this year (i.e. on the shores of MD).

As a PG native the only Hurricane I had encountered was with Isabelle in 2003 (Hurricane Irene felt like nothing for me). The description meteorologist have been attributing to this storm have made me quite concerned.

One individual quotes:

"I have never seen anything like it!"

Well now Ms Sandy has my full attention. What are your takes on this upcoming storm?

I worried about losing power for at least 2 days.

Unless Sandy does not take that predicted west turn into Maryland I'm expecting that to happen. The exact course is still yet to be determined but as of now it doesn't look good for our state.

I'm going back to Salisbury on Saturday night, before they shut the bridge down and from what I've heard/seen/read; the Eastern Shore can expect gusts over 75mph. It'll be a challenge no doubt, but as long as I have power, water/soda and internet, I'll manage; who knows, I might actually be able to get some quality footage of a hurricane for the first time since both Isabel and Irene did there worst at night.

But in reality, Sandy has the potential to be 10x as bad as Isabel was for certain sections of the Mid-Atlantic. We don't need to be concerned so much about the surge, it'll be the wind that's gonna get us this time and with those trees the way they are right now, this is going to be a nightmare for some of you guys in the DC area.

I hope PEPCO is ready....

PEPCO told me to take two aspirin and call back tomorrow! When the big blow came earlier this year we lost the power before the gust front struck. They pulled the plug before the storm hit when they lost the lines going to West Virginia. We have buried lines in our community (Montgomery Village) so it wasn't all the trees around here or lightening strikes! In our case PEPCO couldn't round up the usual suspects.

The only things that worry me are the trees and PEPCO.
The trees are nature but PEPCO is one of the most expensive utilities I have ever paid for and I have lived a few places. I have never experienced such poor service from them in the years I have lived here. We have had major outages twice this year and I don't know if they can explain their way out of it. Look out for this time and keep your fingers crossed.

Batteries? Who uses batteries anymore?

Hand Crank Radio @ Sharper Image

It can charge your phone too. One of the best investments any household should have.

I spent today doing the following:

Got 30 gal of gas for the generator...powers heat, refrigeration, lights, TV, Alarms, (Fire and Burglar), and internet.

Put edges on 3 chainsaws.

Test fired the generator under load, as listed above.

Got a second generator ready for the beach house.

Got the boiler ready to do hot water heating. Nothing like a hot shower by flashlight.

I am taking no chances. The fact that I am ready, means that this will be for naught. But that is OK with me.

Mandatory evacuation issued for parts of Ocean City and waterfront properties in Worcester County.

Stay safe everyone.

I am taking it seriously and I've stocked up on water...not so much food since I can probably live off my fat for a few days.
