Hi everyone, my husband will be working at NIST in Gaithersburg for appx 6 weeks this summer. We are a family of four and will be accompanying him. Can you all suggest some areas in town or nearby towns that is family friendly, safe, and within walking distance to the metro and nearby shops/ parks etc? We arent sure if we will need a car. Our kids are under 3 yo and would like to be able to take them out for a stroll while husband's at work.
I have looked at craigslist and there are some temporary summer subleases in College Park or Silver Spring. Is College Park/ Silver Spring to Gaithersburg an easy commute by metro, or will he need a car? These fully furnished subleases are attractive to us because it is cheaper than these extended stay hotels at more than $100 per night, but the pros and cons are still being hammered out.
Thanks in advance for all your advice!

It would be a very long commute by Metro to Gaithersburg, as you have to go into DC, and back out again. It would be much better by car. A sublease sounds like a good idea, and I hope it works out for you.

A sublease is fine, but College Park is fairly far away. I would look in Rockville, Gaithersburg, or Germantown. There are family friendly places there (mostly west of 270) The Metro does not go to NIST, but there are bus lines from Shady Grove Metro station that do go there. There's a MARC train stop not far away, but too far to walk. The bus from there goes by NIST.

For six weeks? Seriously reconsider this idea.

I'd be surprised if NIST doesn't have some sort of dorm situation set up for singles to use.

I'd look for corporate housing, like the Oakwood in Gaithersburg.

there is a commuter bus 201 that goes to NIST that stops right in front of NIST on weekdays so you could live near 1 of the other bus stops and take the 201 bus to NIST
