Hi all.

Just started working for a company that's moving to College Park in July. Coming from Fairfax, VA, and I would like a place with a smaller feel. Will be some opportunity for telecommuting, maybe 2 days / week. Anything 30-60 minutes out from College Park you recommend? I'm looking for a place where you see more people you know on a daily basis, some parks and maybe bike paths, small scale theatre and musical venues... A fair share of local, thriving mom and pop businesses would be a wonderful perk. Towns with a small colllege also welcome. I'll be taking a driving trip north and west of College Park in a few weeks.

My daughter is active in theatre and music, and my son enjoys martial arts, swimming and both tabletop and video gaming. The latter a little obscure to match, I know, but things pop up in all kinds of unexpected places.

Thank you all in advance for your input. If there are other places I should post this, I'd be happy to know. I don't know Maryland well, so general comments on living there and the personality of that part of the state are also welcome.

thats hard to find in the beltway but berwyn height and areas by Colombia md sound like that. Greenbelt has a theater and swimming. pg and moco have good rec centers but not a small town feel. Also, anne arundel county may have what u looking for it quiet and has many paths and parks. good luck

I was thinking the same thing but then I thought the OP must have already seen College Park or would rather live away from in the inner suburbs.

Bowie is a very nice neighborly, friendly City. We have plenty of parks where you can sit and relax with some walking, biking trails (I recommend the B&O trail which runs through north Bowie and the woods along the east edge of the "K" section). You can enjoy a show at the White Marsh theater, just off of Rt 301.

University Park and Berwyn Heights would be good options. Old Greenbelt (between East West Highway and route 201, NE of 495) is great and fits your description well except not quite as affluent so not exactly a thriving town center, but a nice one with an historic theater and one of the best local music venues in the DC area. A little further south, Mt. Ranier is a great up and coming neighborhood.
